Guido Marsella Fiano di Avellino DOC, 2021
Grapes used: 100% Fiano
Soil: rolling hills
Altitude: 2640 feet above sea level
Vineyard age: planted in 1990
All the Fiano comes from one 7ha vineyard in Summonte, the highest altitude in Avellino. This is the same town as Ciro Picariello. The wine is fermented and aged in tank with some fine lees contact. He bottles after 12 months and lets it rest in bottle for another year.
Sant’Ángelo a Scala & Summonte are most associated with famous Fiano wines. The vineyards hug the foothills of Monte Partenio and lie as high up as 450-650m above sea level (Especially at Summonte). Summonte’s rigid weather, high diurnal temperature differences and very poor, rocky soils are probably the factors most contributing to the unique profile of its wines. (The grapes really pack in the sugar, and so these big, bold Fiano wines are nothing like you might expect from their cool climate and mountain habitat.) These are also some of the smokiest Fianos of all and some of the most age worthy too. (Italy’s Native Wine Grape Terroirs d’Agata, Ian 2019)
