Ferrando “La Torrazza” Erbaluce di Caluso, 2020
Luigi Ferrando and his family have been making wine in the alpine foothills where Piedmont meets the Aosta Valley for over a century, and they’re truly masters of the region. Their ‘Canavese Rosso’ Nebbiolo was an ethereal treat from an earlier catalogue and his Erbaluce is just as enticing. While Gavi is often considered the quintessential Piedmont white, to my palate lesser known Erbaluce di Caluso is often more complex and interesting. Sharing a hillside plot on Ferrando’s farm with alpine Nebbiolo, his Erbaluce is equally pretty, with bright acidity and airy texture, and there’s a depth not often found in other Piedmont whites. Notes of lemon peel and citrus are backed up by stone fruit and the aforementioned touch of dried herbs and white pepper. It’s fresh but hearty and warm. The perfect wine for the local seafood that’s fresh this time of year, or pair with richer vegetable dishes and some fall spice.Â
A true gem of a wine from a great vintage.
